It's all about endurance...right?!?!?! That's what I read this morning before I went for my first 4-mile run. It's not about time or distance it's about endurance. I was apprehensive about this a.m.'s run. 4-miles! I have never done 4-miles. I read some other blogs, articles and running groups where they don't run the entire long run. They break it up into run/walks, taking that into mind I hit the road.
I decided today that I would run 1-mile at a time and walk for 60 seconds after each mile is completed. That worked for me today. After the first mile I was on a busier street so I ran until I got to a side street and walked for 60 seconds, counting backwards, I thought counting backwards would slow my mind down and help regulate my breathing a little better.
I hit the second mile right on target and ran until I hit some shade and then walked.
My third mile I usually hit my cool down spot, but I had another mile to go...mind over matter! I ran up a small incline and then walked. I did not want to waste my walking energy going up an incline. I am not going to lie...that 4th mile was difficult. I knew how much further in my route before I was going to hit a mile and it seemed impossible. I broke up that mile into small "targets" Get to the corner, then to the community garden, to the bus barn, to the assisted living...then I knew the end of the 4th mile was in sight. It came before I knew it and I felt good! I continued running until a corner so I could start my cool down walk from there. Even my cool down walk was at a faster pace than normal!
5th week down and 4-mile run completed!
